The Practice of  Chinese Calligraphy

Toda escritura es un secreto. Mirar un carácter chino es mirar un dibujo. Ese es el secreto. El practicante de esta caligrafía aprende a escribir dibujos. A partir de ese momento la mente occidental analítica da paso a la intuición y se aprende a soñar.

Se aprende a ver lo que era casi imposible reconocer. Se aprende a descubrir cuando un trabajo está bien hecho y a disfrutar de la magia de poder caligrafiar con la ancestral técnica del pincel, la tinta y el papel blanco. 

Practicar la caligrafía, en palabras de Miyamoto Musashi (antiguo guerrero japonés) nos permite “refinar nuestro espíritu”. Ella te permitirá refinar tus gestos, tu visión de la estética, el gusto por la elegancia y el gusto por la belleza.

All writing system is a secret. To look at a Chinese character is to look at a drawing. That is the secret. The student of Chinese calligraphy learns how to write drawings. From that moment on, the analytic western mind recedes and intuition takes over. At that moment one does not think, one dreams, something particularly associated with oriental thinking.

We learn to see what was almost impossible to recognize. We can determine when a calligraphic work is correct, well balanced and full of energy once we have practiced this art for some time. We can then enjoy the magic of writing this ancient oriental art using the ancestral technique of the paintbrush, the black ink and the white paper.

To practice calligraphy, in words of Miyamoto Musashi (an old Japanese warrior) allows us to refine our spirit. It will lead you to the refinement of your body expressions, broaden your vision of aesthetics and increase your appeal for elegance and your inner pleasure before beauty.

Paul Quintero, desde sus días de practicante de arte marcial, se dejó seducir por la belleza de las caligrafías que ornaban la escuela. Es en 1981, en Francia, comienza su formación en esta práctica y arte, en un taller intensivo que ofreciera Jaques Foussadier, el calígrafo oficial de la Asociación Zen Internacional. Después se hizo alumno de la sensei (maestra) Mary Onari de 1986 a 1996, a quien continúa frecuentando en calidad de discípulo. Hoy Paul Quintero es el calígrafo oficial de la Asociación Zen de Venezuela e instructor de esta arte que, teñida del espíritu zen, enseña como práctica de inmersión en sí mismo. Escribir? Dibujar?

Paul Quintero (being a martial art practitioner) was seduced by the beauty of the calligraphies that decorated his master’s dojo.  In 1981, while being in Blois (France), he begins to practice Chinese calligraphy in an intensive workshop conducted by Zen monk Jacques Foussadier, the official calligrapher of the International Zen Association at the Zen Temple of La Gendronniere.  From 1986 to 1996 he studied both Chinese and Japanese calligraphy under the guidance of Sensei Mary Onari in Venezuela. Paul is presently the official calligrapher of the Zen Association of Venezuela. He is an instructor of Chinese calligraphy and as a Zen monk teaches it in a state of moving meditation. He founded the Water Budas School of Art in 1999 in Caracas, Venezuela.
